How To Calculate How Far You Are From A Lightning?

On the other hand, the speed of sound is 343 m/s (1,125 feet per second) in air at 20°C (68°F). This is much slower than the speed of light, which is why we see lightning before we hear thunder.

To calculate the distance of a lightning strike, we use the time difference between seeing the lightning and hearing the thunder.

Since the speed of light is so fast, we can assume that the time it takes for the light to reach our eyes is nearly instantaneous.

The thunder, however, takes some time to reach our ears.

Here's the formula to calculate the distance of a lightning strike:

Distance = Speed of Sound x Time

In the formula, "Time" refers to the number of seconds between seeing the lightning and hearing the thunder.

Let's assume a temperature of 20°C (68°F) and a time of 5 seconds between the lightning flash and the thunder.

1. Detailed Calculation Method

So the calculations will be like this:

Time between lightning and thunderclap  = 5 seconds

• Speed of sound at 20°C = 343 meters per second or 1,125 feet per second
• Distance in meters = 343 x 5 = 1,715 meters
• Distance in feet = 1,125 x 5 = 5,625 feet
• Distance in miles = 5,625 feet (to convert it into miles we divide it by 5,280 feet/mile) = 1.07 miles
• Distance in kilometers = 1,715 meters (converting into kilometers) = 1.72 kilometers

2. Simplified Calculation Method

Now doing the same calculations using our 5 second and 3 second method:

Same as before, Time between lightning and thunderclap  = 5 seconds

• Distance in miles = 5 seconds (divided by 5) = 1 mile
• Distance in kilometers = 5 seconds (divided by 3) = 1.67 kilometers.

The Results

So as you can see, just by counting time in seconds also gives us a much closer idea of the lightning distance when compared to the accurate detailed calculations.
